Frequently Asked Questions

Counselling or psychotherapy may be helpful if you:

  • Feel anxious, low, overwhelmed, or emotionally distressed
  • Are experiencing relationship or family difficulties
  • Feel stuck in unhelpful patterns
  • Want greater self-understanding or emotional support
  • Are navigating change, loss, or uncertainty

You don’t need to be in crisis to begin therapy. Many people come simply because something doesn’t feel quite right.

Although both are supportive, they have different aims and depths of work.

Counselling / Psychotherapy (BACP-aligned):

  • Focuses on emotional wellbeing and mental health
  • Explores thoughts, feelings, past experiences, and patterns
  • Supports processing of distress, trauma, and relational difficulties
  • Reflective, relational, and therapeutic
  • May be short-term or longer-term

Coaching:

  • Focuses on goals, clarity, and forward movement
  • Action-oriented and structured
  • Present- and future-focused
  • Usually time-limited
  • Supports personal or professional development rather than mental health treatment

If you’re unsure which is right for you, this can be explored together in an initial consultation.

Relationship counselling focuses on the dynamic between two people, rather than on one individual alone. It supports understanding, communication, and healthier ways of relating.

It is suitable for:

  • Romantic couples
  • Parent and adult child relationships
  • Siblings
  • Other significant non-romantic relationships

You don’t need to know what outcome you want before starting — therapy can help you explore this safely.

  • Both people are offered a neutral, respectful space
  • We explore patterns of communication and emotional responses
  • The focus is on understanding rather than blame
  • Sessions support clarity, connection, and informed decision-making

Play Therapy

  • Uses play and creative expression to help process emotions
  • Most commonly used with children
  • Supports emotional regulation, expression, and understanding

Sand Play Therapy

  • Uses a sand tray and symbolic figures
  • Can be helpful for children, adolescents, and adults
  • Particularly useful when feelings are hard to express verbally

No creativity or prior experience is needed.

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity.
It can support:

  • Stress reduction
  • Emotional regulation
  • Anxiety management
  • Greater self-awareness

Mindfulness may be offered on its own or integrated into counselling or coaching.

  • Most counselling and psychotherapy clients begin with weekly sessions
  • Relationship counselling is usually weekly, especially at the start
  • Coaching may be weekly or fortnightly
  • Frequency can be reviewed and adapted over time
